Relish ~ Ingredients for living
"So many customers ask us, 'Do you have a website?' We want to be able to answer, 'Yes.'" What the owners of Relish got is an elegant site that evokes the store itself—a cornicopia of ingredients for living assembled by a masterful eye.
Indiana University computer science professors Beth Plale and Dennis Gannon were looking to make an immediate impression with a website for their new organization, The Data and Search Insitute. In the coming months they would be soliciting corporate partnerships and needed a professional-looking site to help them tell their story.
Pervasive Technology Labs at Indiana University is six labs brought together to perform leading-edge information technology research to attract and educate the state of Indiana's workforce of tomorrow, and accelerate the state's economic growth. While the mission is shared, the focus of these six labs is unique. The goal here was to develop and implement one design that supported six disparate units.
Root, a professional services firm
Root has been serving the Bloomington community with accounting, finance and technology services for over 20 years. Like an individual, a company's identity will evolve over that span of time. Working with image consultant Wade Schultz, Root—the brand—was born. And the website, http://www.Root.com, through graphic updates and copywriting, is now a seamless extension of the brand.
Timothy Shantz is the founder and artistic director of New Art Voices, a chamber choir specializing in contemporary repertoire. Tim is also a candidate for the Doctor of Music degree at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and decided to create a web presence to accompany him as he begins interviewing for post-graduate positions.
There were three critical areas Tim wanted to address with his website: one, he wanted to make recordings of his live performances available to those interested in hiring him; two, he wanted the site to visually represent his dynamics as a conductor; and three, he wanted to present his repertoire in a way that would be easy for music directors to peruse, and for Tim to maintain.
Jan has been treating eating disorders on an individual and group basis for over ten years. She is a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders, The National Eating Disorders Organization and the Eating Disorders Task Force of Indiana.
Working with as many clients as she does, Jan was looking for a way to increase communications to her clients and prospective clients, while decreasing the amount of time it takes to deliver basic information about eating disorders. The result is a web site that delivers all the information from her brochures, as well as links to additional resources.
Research at Indiana University
The team members of this project were responsible for a massive undertaking: aggregating all the research-specific web content at www.indiana.edu under one umbrella website.
One of the major challenges with a project like this is the need for constant communications with an impressive array of constituencies.
The Stone Age Insititute is a non-profit organization devoted to the study of technology, adaptation and evolution in human prehistory.
Having created a prototype themselves in Dreamweaver, the researchers asked for my expertise in publishing the site to the web, ensuring that the design was scaleable, and that it be viewable and printable on multiple operating systems and browswers. They also asked, being a not-for-profit, that the site be maintainable by their staff. I reviewed the pages they created and identified the basic pieces of the architecture: the banner, navigation, content area and footer. By removing all the unneeded code, I was able to reduce file sizes and thus the page load times by as much as 90%.
Envisiontel is a reseller of web conferencing technologies. They have come from inside the myriad companies offering these technologies and guide their clients to the right product for their needs.
As a start-up company, they were looking for an initial presence—and fast. "Clean and clear" was a message they wanted to convey to companies unfamiliar with the products they represent. They feel their site design reflects this. And as a byproduct, the process even generated their tagline: "Stay local. Work global."
Since 1977, Kline Cabinetmakers have been producing top-quality cabinets and furnishings. Recently, shop owners asked me to refresh their image to reflect changes around the shop. New letterhead and business cards are just the beginning, with a new website in the near future.
